Finding a therapist that you feel like you can click with and understands you or your child can be a hopeful, yet overwhelming route in the sea of mental health. Sometimes a major life event happens that shakes us to our core. Or we may find that we are losing the tolerance we used to have to manage the twists and turns of this unpredictable life. Or maybe, we just need an objective person to truly listen and hear us. I ensure to provide a safe, open, and accepting environment to share and process challenging events, thoughts, and feelings. Let's get to a place where you, your child, and/or teen can feel more confident in overcoming obstacles and can rediscover joy in daily life!
Ciara has a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She additionally possesses two bachelors degrees in Psychology and Social Work from Appalachian State University. Ciara has ten years of experience working with children and families in a variety of settings including child welfare, hospice, and mental health.
Ciara utilizes a variety of therapeutic approaches based on age and development including client-centered therapy, talk therapy (empathetic understanding; thought and feeling exploration and reflection), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), non-directive and directive play therapy, art therapy, mindfulness, meditative activities, acceptance and commitment therapy, cathartic movement, grief and bereavement therapy, gradual exposure, and guided goal-setting.
Ciara understands that children have their own unique language and do not always have the words to express how they are feeling; especially when they are experiencing "big" emotions that may be new to them. Ciara also works closely with adults to explore, manage, and process thoughts and feelings originating from present circumstances and/or from childhood.

There is also a private pay rate available (if not using insurance). If you are a member with a different insurance provider, feel free to contact your provider about your current plan to see if it includes out-of-network benefits for the opportunity to receive reimbursement for a portion or full cost of sessions.
The first session is where I will receive the most information regarding your/your child’s mental health, major events, and current life circumstances. Goals for therapy will be developed, discussed, and added to a treatment plan which will be presented at the following session.
After your first session, routine sessions will last between 50-60 minutes. Sessions are tailored based on the age and preference where thoughts and feelings are processed, skills are taught, and progress in reaching goals will be discussed. Sessions can be scheduled weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Sessions may last up to 3 months-12 months+ depending on severity and consistency.

"We are incredibly lucky to have worked with Ciara when our son was in the third grade. His social anxiety led to school refusal, and our bright and quirky dude just wasn't happy. Ciara created a targeted plan and used a combination of counseling techniques that resulted in noticeable improvement by us and school staff. She honored his preferences and needs and taught him ways to think about and approach struggles. I always felt informed, and Ciara respected the confidentiality that he and her had. Highly recommend Ciara to assist your family with any challenge your child is facing!"
"Ciara helped our family in amazing ways! She is very professional and has been a complete asset for our daughter with anxiety. I recommend Ciara to anyone struggling - especially kids - she has amazing ways of getting them to open up and work through any issues! We appreciate her beyond measure."
"My daughter first met Ciara when she was only 8 years old and began having anxiety. My daughter did not connect with the other counselors we met with. My daughter liked and trusted Ciara from the start, as did I. Ciara worked with my daughter on problem solving and coping strategies so she was able to manage her anxiety much better. Ciara has a way of bringing out the best in children because she can identify what motivates them and focuses on their individual strengths. We are so grateful and blessed to have Ciara's support. She has done so much for my daughter and for me as a concerned mother. My child's quality of life has gotten so much better and I could not ask for a better therapist for my daughter."
